Background
The purpose of this plan is to address collisions on Indio's roadways network. Between 2017 and 2021, the City of Indio experienced over 1,200 collisions, 37 of which resulted in fatalities. This number is far too high for this close-knit community, and a Comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan will help the City address its most significant safety threats.
Additionally, the thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of visitors that come to Indio each year for festivals utilize the City’s roadway network in one way or another. This large influx of roadway users underscores the need for an action plan that will identify ways for the City to better prepare for and accommodate these visitors, while maintaining the safety and integrity of the City’s transportation network.
The goal of this planning effort is to develop evidence based, cost-effective strategies for improving roadway safety. To achieve this goal, the Plan will include the following elements:
- Evaluation of existing transportation conditions
- Community engagement to gather feedback about roadway safety concerns and potential improvements
- Proposed strategies for improving roadways safety
- Prioritized Project List for future grant opportunities
